Kushiyaki Hakata Matsusuke Haruyoshi 串燒博多松介 春吉店 (Fukuoka, JAPAN) ★★★☆☆

I decided to change things up a bit tonight. After having ramen, kaisendon, ochazuke and teppanyaki in the last 48 hours, it's time for some Japanese grilled skewers, or Kushiyaki. Hakata Matsusuke (串燒博多松介) is a pretty popular concept under the Matsusuke Group who specializes in Kushiyaki (grilled skewers) and Mizutaki (chicken hot pot).

The Haruyoshi branch (春吉店) I picked for us tonight is located near Nakasu (中洲) and it offers mainly chicken skewers but not hot pot.

I always love Zashiki-style seating, a traditional Japanese seating arrangement featuring mats and a low table set on a wooden or tatami flooring.

Of course, I had to check out their grill to see whether they use charcoal or not. Nothing beats charcoal grilled meat.

Some snacks to kick off the meal before they get our skewers ready.

Neri (380 yen) - First up, the house specialty Neri skewer. This was done like a traditional Tsukune (Japanese chicken meatballs). The minced chicken and pork meatball was grilled to perfection using sesame oil and salt. Very very tasty and a bit smoky. As usual, it came with a bit of chicken soft bone for some extra bite.

Little guy absolutely loves it~

In fact, we had to add a second order just for him!

Asparagus and bacon (320 yen) - Not exactly what I was expecting when I saw the words "asparagus and bacon" skewer. What I thought was bacon-wrapped asparagus roll turned out to be asparagus and bacon grilled together. One item I could definitely do without.

Beef tongue (480 yen) - A little too chewy for me. Interestingly, it came with some red wine sauce on the side.

Fresh Chicken Kushiyaki Set (1,350 yen) - Another signature item here. Whatever you do, make sure you order this one!

Tail - Very tender and juicy. Love the deep flavors.

Thigh - The firm texture was really nice (this chicken must've done a lot of exercise!) and love the rich flavors.

Skin - First time I had chicken skins I think. The texture looked very crunchy but it turned out to be quite chewy and crispy at the same time. Interesting.

Gizzard - Not really into chicken gizzard so I didn't try them. Even forgot to take a picture.

Neck - I would say probably the most special one out of the five. The texture was very gelatin, yet there seemed to be a crispy coating on the outside that as soon as you chew on it, it releases the gelatin from the inside. Very interesting mouth-feel and highly recommended if you haven't tried grilled chicken neck before.

Chicken wings (260 yen) - The skin was very crispy the way we all wanted it to be. Very minimal seasoning which is always good.

Hakata Toro-Tama (300 yen) - The final signature dish of the night. The soft-boiled egg was wrapped with a thin slice of pork and finished off with a shower of a special homemade sauce made with soy, brown sugar, ginger, sherry vinegar and chicken broth.

This dish probably requires a bit of finesse and technique. Anyone who loves soft-boiled egg (like me) would fall in love with it instantly.

Chicken and egg rice bowl (700 yen) - There were actually more chicken and egg here than rice I think.

Very eggy. Not bad.

We had a lot of food tonight so instead of taking a cab or subway, we decided to take a slow walk back to our hotel.
