Houraku Manju 蜂楽饅頭 (Fukuoka, JAPAN) ★★★☆☆

Jelloman is off to her shopping spree while little nugget has fallen asleep all of a sudden. So, I have all the time in the world to explore JR Hakata City above and underneath Hakata Station.

I love to explore the street food scene wherever I go so it was the perfect time for me to check out one of the most popular snacks found near the station, the famous imagawayaki (車輪餅) from Houraku Manju (蜂楽饅頭).

Founded in 1953, Houraku Manju first started off as a producer of honey out of Kumamoto (熊本). In order to attract more customers, they decided to make imagawayaki, or Japanese wheel cakes (or wheel buns) using the very same honey they produced and it has turned into a very successful business.

What made their buns so delicious was the fact that they've added their honey to the flour to give it an unique texture and flavor.

These buns came in two different fillings - red bean paste and white bean paste.

100 yen a piece sounds too good a deal to be true!

Of course, there's a reason why this is called a wheel cake. Look at that round shaped bun; it's almost like a wheel.

It's very soft and spongy. I could smell the sweet fragrance of the honey from miles away.

I thought the one with white bean paste was seriously tasty. It wasn't overly sweet and that creamy texture (of the puréed white bean) was a really nice match with the bun. Yum~
