In the blink of an eye, my nugget is already turning 6 months old this week. I wanted to get him something special (more for us than for him!), something that would jump out in a photo. After enjoying two pretty good watermelon cakes in July (Signature-Tastic at Lifetastic and then One In A Melon at Vive Cake Boutique), I thought that would be perfect "thing" for him. And the timing couldn't get any better as I recently heard rumblings about Fine Foods introducing a new rose watermelon cake for the summer.
Rose watermelon cake ($360) - Black Star Pastry from Sydney created an internet frenzy with their rose scented strawberry watermelon cake last year and finally, the "wind of watermelon cake" is arriving in Hong Kong.
Fine Foods' version is pretty much the same as Black Star's original recipe with mixed fruits sitting on top, while layers of watermelon and sponge cake (2 of them) in the middle. But they seem to have taken away the almond dacquoise and the rose scented cream is also gone, replaced by a panna cotta.
This is seriously good. Not as delicious as Lifetastic's but still very refreshing and addictive. The absence of almond dacquoise and pistachio was the difference maker here but nevertheless a worthy alternative. They have this in smaller size too, I was told so perhaps I could check that out in my next visit.
