Following a string of hardworking days, it's finally Friday! We decided to treat ourselves to a decent lunch after our meeting in Hunghom and a few colleagues suggested Snow Garden (雪園會館) as our lunch venue, a place I have yet to try myself.
I have heard of Snow Garden quite a few times as a kid. Their iconic North Point flagship was one of the go-to restaurants for Huaiyang cuisine (淮揚菜) back in the 1980s but this Hunghom branch (opened in 2023) seems to put more focus on the modern take of Huaiyang or Shanghainese dishes.
Hand shredded wheat gluten (手撕烤麩) – Our set menu for six people started off with a couple of cold starters. The wheat gluten was really big in size and was served with the usual suspects of mushrooms, black fungus, bamboo shoots and green pea. Not bad.
Chicken with sheet jelly (雞絲粉皮) – This came with relatively few strips of chicken.
Shanghainese imitation crab (賽螃蟹) – The mock crab meat was tossed with shrimps and carrots, with the single egg yolk sitting in the middle. I liked the one from Spring Deer (鹿鳴春飯店) where they actually added fish into the egg white for some contrasting bite. I missed Spring Deer a lot to be honest.
Hot and sour soup (酸辣湯) – One of the few times I took a flyer on a bowl of hot and sour soup. I thought this was pretty delicate. The broth which was neither too spicy nor too sour, was packed with ingredients including mushroom, chicken and what I thought was sea cucumber. Pretty nice.
Stir fried eggplants (醬燒茄子) – In my opinion, the best dish of the afternoon. A simple dish of eggplants stir-fried with minced pork. I love the velvety texture and the seasoning wasn't over the top.
Shanghainese fried noodles (上海粗炒) – Everyone seemed to favor noodles over fried rice today.
Deep-fried egg whites with red bean paste (高力豆沙) – Some of us were complaining about the egg white balls which were not in the usual perfectly rounded shape. This was just OK.
Well, this one came out of left field but I thought we all enjoyed lunch and our chit-chat today. Now time to kick into the next gear for a few more hours before weekend officially starts.
