Duck and Waffle IFC (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

When I first heard about Duck & Waffle, the iconic London restaurant opening in IFC this week, my first reaction was to give it another month or so to smoothen out their operation before I came to check out their all-day dining menu (which of course includes their duck & Waffle dish). But there was obviously a tremendous sense of urgency within me that said I better get it done sooner or later. So, I ended up picking up the phone and got myself a table at the very last minute.

Timing was a little peculiar for me as I was here just a little before 6pm. Afternoon snack? Early dinner? Hard to say at this point.....

I tried to make up my mind while my server got my table ready.

Unfortunately, I don't work near IFC. Otherwise, I could really see myself lining up here every week to get my Duck & Waffle for lunch. But a closer look revealed that they actually have more than just Duck & Waffle on the go. Croissant, salad and bagel too.....

After all, it's their opening week so not surprisingly, the place was already packed before 6pm.

Duck & Waffle ($230) - Yeah, getting anything else other than the signature Duck & Waffle dish would be uncivilized.

I had to slide the fried duck egg under a bit to check out my crispy duck leg. And by the look of it, it was perfect.

I had this 3 years ago when Duck and Waffle was doing a pop-up at OZone in The Ritz Carlton Hotel Hong Kong. But I thought the dish tasted even better today. The confit duck leg, buttermilk waffle, fried duck egg and mustard maple syrup (with mustard, no wonder it came with some heat!) all worked in perfect harmony (flavor-wise).

Miso custard tart ($80) - Jelloman didn't join me for my afternoon snack / early dinner so I decided to grab her something on the go here. I didn't get her the signature Duck & Waffle though. Instead, it was one of the restaurant's most popular dessert - their miso custard tart.

This was a very light cheesecake that came with both savory and sweet notes. An unusual combination of flavors for the palate but once I got used to it, it was pretty yummy.

As suspected coming in, service was a little messy in the opening week. I saw servers running all over the place but very few came to my rescue when I was looking to place my order. It's definitely an area that requires some serious improvement.
