Rocambolesc is not just any ice-cream parlour. It's made famous because of its owner, Jordi Roca who happens to be the co-owner of three Michelin starred El Celler de Can Roca in Girona. There used to be just one branch of Rocambolesc in Madrid, which is located in the Gourmet Experience zone of El Corte Inglés de Serrano. It wasn't until last year that they opened this pop-up at Mercado San Miguel.
If you're looking for variety, then Rocambolesc probably won't be your cup of tea. Chef Roca likes to serve up flavors inspired by his childhood memories so expect 4 to 6 different flavors on any given day. During this day when we paid the ice cream parlour a visit, there were 4 flavors up for grabs (chocolate; blueberry, lemon and vanilla, frozen yogurt, banana and vanilla).
Toppings are a very big part of Rocambolesc's unique ice-cream experience. There were 24 different toppings available for picking but don't let that scare you because they do have recommended toppings for each flavor.
Banana and vanilla sorbet (€3.75) - This came with 3 recommended toppings including caramel crunch, white chocolate sponge cake and Italian meringue.
Very soft and milky with mildly rich banana flavor. Not bad.
I particularly enjoyed the crunchy caramel flakes which meshed so well with the sorbet.
Rocambolesc also serves a special treat called panet, a hot brioche stuffed with ice cream and loads of toppings. It's like an ice-cream sandwich that is warm on the outside and cold inside. Unfortunately, since we were running a little late for lunch, we didn't get to try it out on this occasion.
