La Casa de las Torrijas (Madrid, SPAIN)

We were thinking about making one final stop before having an early dinner tonight. It suddenly struck me that we have yet to have any Spanish torrija on this trip. So without further delay, I decided to bring everyone to La Casa de las Torrijas for some afternoon treats (sweet ones).

Located within walking distance from Sol Station, La Casa de las Torrijas is a traditional Spanish restaurant and cafe known for its torrijas, the Spanish equivalent of French toast

While the best place to get a torrija would be at a Spanish grandmother's house, this is probably the second best option. As the name suggests, it is "the house of Spanish fried bread".

Look what I found behind the counter table.

There are two different flavors of torrijas being served here - with milk (€2.5) and sweet wine (€1.5). I will gladly try both!

This had been soaked in milk before frying it up with egg, vanilla, orange, lemon and of course oil.

It passed the cross section test with flying colors. In fact, it was so moist, light and pillowy with the perfect balance of sweetness (vanilla and milk), acidity (lemon) and bitterness (orange zest?).

Unlike the previous "milk" torriija, the "sweet wine" flavored torrija was crispy on the outside with a beautiful cinnamon and sugar coating.

I decided to order a glass of iced coffee to go with my delicious torrijas.

Like most Spaniards we met on this trip, the good fellows here were so friendly and warm to tourists. When they saw me standing outside their kitchen to watch their chef make torrijas, they didn't hesitate a bit before inviting me into the kitchen. I ended up getting a crash course on how to make an authentic torrija.

This was how it went - dip the bread into a mixture of egg, vanilla, orange and lemon juice; then throw it into the fire. I meant boiling oil! That was easy.....

La Casa de las Torrijas has been serving their signature torrijas since 1907 and is still going strong after more than a century. Check them out if you happen to be visiting Puerta de Sol and Real Casa de Correos (Royal House of the Post Office). It's just a comfortable 5-minute walk.
