Founded by award-winning chocolatier Yu-Hsuan Cheng (鄭畬軒), Yu Chocolatier (畬室法式巧克力甜點創作) started to garner attention of dessert lovers shortly after they made their debut in 2015.
They've been on my radar for quite some time now so it was great to finally find time for a quick visit. Nice to see pairing of spirits including whisky, rum and cognac to go with the chocolate and chocolate themed pastries.
Not surprisingly, most creations are chocolate themed (would we expect otherwise from a chocolatier?) with the exception of the ever-popular lemon tart and Mont Blanc.
Handmade chocolate of course a big hit here!
Mont Blanc (嵯峨) (NT$230) - For some reason, I wasn't into chocolate this afternoon so I reluctantly took their Mont Blanc cake instead. Bad choice from a dessert shop made famous for their chocolate? Let's find out.
This was pretty decent. On top of the shortcrust pastry were fresh cream, white chocolate, meringue and chestnut purée garnished with caramelized chestnut. The rum flavored chestnut purée really stood out nicely but the rest of the ingredients didn't seem to feed off each other as well. Not bad but could definitely be better.
Obviously, Yu's previous work at 3-Michelin-starred restaurant Pavillon Ledoyen and chocolaterie Jacques Génin has paid off in spade for him. It was a mistake on my part not to check out one of his chocolate cakes so I will most definitely come back for his handmade chocolate and chocolate themed desserts another time.
