Pâtisserie Toshi Yoroizuka (Tokyo, JAPAN) ★★★★★

We were going to have teppanyaki grill for dinner on our first night back from Hakone. But since our dinner booking was at 7pm, I thought I better put my spare hour into good use by visiting Tokyo Midtown which was very close to our dinner venue. However, one thing led to another and before we even headed inside the shopping mall, my sweet tooth already came calling and the next thing I knew, we were sitting in front of Pâtisserie Toshi Yoroizuka (鎧塚俊彦) waiting for our seats.

As one of Tokyo's most successful pastry shops and dessert bars, you will be dreaming if for a minute you think there's no lineup right here. Look at the "invisible" lineup - the bench on the left. That's your lineup right there.

Chef Toshi Yoroizuka is considered one of the top patissiers in all of Japan. His Ebisu flagship store has just celebrated its 10th anniversary but I've always enjoyed this branch next to the Tokyo Midtown a little more.

I've been a fan of their Mont blanc cake since they opened here back in 2007.

Apart from the Mont blanc, what separated Pâtisserie Toshi Yoroizuka with the rest is their 10-seat dessert bar where one gets to watch their pastry chefs prepare all the high quality desserts live, right in front of their eyes.

A very inspiring menu with detail drawings of each of their 10 desserts.

.....highlighting all the ingredients one by one.....

First up was our amuse bouche, a chilled mushroom vanilla soup with a bit of crumbles to get things started.

If you like fig and cassis like we do, then their Millefeuille au Figues (fig mille feuille) is the perfect way to kick things off around here. Underneath the scoop of cassis ice-cream was a mille feuille of crispy pastries and custard along with fig compote, fig jelly and a little bit of cassis sauce. Very delicate and addictive.

But first timers should never leave this place without trying their signature Ukishima. Watching the way our pastry chef put layer after layer of chestnut purée over the whipped cream and red bean paste, it felt very much like an artist working hard on a beautiful sculpture. And look, it was a masterpiece!

This was perfectly complemented by a toasted tea ice-cream and finished with a green tea sauce. Absolutely mouthwatering stuff.

Do expect a 10-minute waiting time for each dessert but trust me, it's well worth the waiting time!
