After failing to secure a table at the popular 3-star sushi temple Sushi Saito, I decided to turn my attention elsewhere. Perhaps a non-Michelin-star sushi joint with a lesser pedigree and similarly impressive food could do the trick for us. But is that too much to ask for !?
I then went on the internet looking for this place and Sushi Fukuzushi at Roppongi seemed like the perfect replacement. Situated in a rather unlikely location at the back of a parking lot, Sushi Fukuzushi is a family-run business that has been around since 1917. While they don't have the same reputation as some of these Michelin-starred sushi restaurants, they are widely regarded as the best value for money (for sushi restaurants) in Tokyo.
The current owner and master chef at Fukuzushi is George Fukuzawa who I believe is the fourth generation owner-chef here.
Appetizers were the usual Japanese egg custard and salad, which were both welcome additions to my empty stomach.
Their miso soup was also a very good one.
Their standard Nigiri (10 pieces of sushi set) represents the best value for money (¥2,500) and that was what I got for lunch this afternoon. Not a bad choice indeed.
I was a little curious of what they had to offer in their a la carte menu so I ended up tackling a few items there.
Chutoro / tuna belly medium fatty (¥1,100). Its buttery texture absolutely melts in your mouth!
Uni / sea urchin (¥1,200). Not as fluffy as some of the better ones I've tasted from the past.
Akagai / Arkshell (¥1,000). Very sweet in taste and perfect texture.
Awabi / poached abalone with a special soy sauce (¥1,000). Not as breath-taking as the chutoro or akagai but nevertheless an excellent choice.
After the completion of lunch, we were all escorted into a separate room where dessert and tea were served.
Dessert was a lovely almond pudding topped with fresh pear purée.
Really glad that we found Sushi Fukuzushi on this trip. Unlike some traditional sushi places, here the sushi masters speak very good English and were very chatty throughout our meal. More importantly, the prices are reasonable and you're guaranteed to get your money's worth.
