Our 24-hour stay in Hakone finished before it even got started. After our lunch buffet, we drove back towards Tokyo but there would be one more stop along the way - Fujisawa (藤沢市), a small city in Kanagawa Prefecture with population of around 400,000.
Of course, there was a good reason behind our decision to spend a night in Fujisawa before heading back to Tokyo. Featured in the 2014 Michelin Guide for Tokyo, Yokohama and Shonan, Kouan (幸庵) is the only restaurant in Shonan region who managed to capture three Michelin stars. Like the Michelin guys used to say, it's totally worth a detour (and we're only doing a stopover) I figured.
While making a reservation at Kouan wasn't an issue, finding accommodation nearby was. Following some really in-depth research, I finally found 8 Hotel Shonan Fujisawa which was just a 5-minute walk from our Kaiseki restaurant.
The hotel doesn't have its own parade, but we were able to find this parking lot across the street from it on Google Map just before the trip. Everything was under control.
After a quick check-in, we got our keys and it was time to unload our luggage, freshen up before our highly anticipated dinner.

This looks like a modern boutique hotel in New York City. Very American style!
Our room was so small that I couldn't afford to take a photo inside the room. I pretty much had to take one outside!
The aircon was right above the bed but no problem there with this little gadget blocking the wind from blowing directing into my face all night.
Bathroom was compact and very clean. With some clever design, they managed to fit in a small bath tub too.
We had a very nice time at Kouan. It was almost 10pm when we were done but it felt really safe walking back to the hotel in the dark.
We got an unexpected morning call the next morning at 9:33am. The guy from the front desk called to remind us that their check-out time was 10am. No way! We have never seen a hotel with such crazily early check-out time. It's insane (but time to wake up)!
