Owakudani Waku-waku Kitchen 大涌谷くろたまご館 (Hakone, JAPAN) ★★★☆☆

10 minutes were all it took for us to drive from our hotel to the Owakudani National Park. We grooved around the park and its gift shop before finding Owakudani Waku-waku Kitchen right inside the gift shop. And what a hidden gem it was.

Wait a minute. I have been to Japan almost every year for the past 10 years but I have never had a Japanese buffet before. Is this the chance to go for it?

¥1,600 for one hour of non-stop eating. Why not?

Owakudani Waku-waku Kitchen is not exactly your typical buffet hall. It actually looks more like a university cafeteria.

For ¥1,600, we get to choose anything here, warm or cold dishes. Drinks (free flow) are also included except for draft beer.

Japanese's famous deep fried chicken nuggets...looking good!

Deep fried minced pork with potato, this one just so-so.

This is a must-try here - Owakudani's own black curry. It tasted fairly sweet which is quite common for Japanese curry.

Let's see what we've got here. The black fried noodles and black curry were both excellent. So were the pork and oden.

There were two sushi served here - salmon and squid. They were okay. Forget about the tomato omelette. That wasn't very good.

After two very full trays, it's time to tackle dessert. Ice-cream? Hell yes....

The matcha (right) was good but the cantaloupe (left) was "out of this world".

I pretty much stuffed myself in less than 50 minutes. The total damage for two - a very comfortable ¥1,600 per head.

After re-charging ourselves, we decided to hit the trail and get to the boiling smelly springs.

The Owakudani Ropeway is a great way to enjoy the spectacular views on the crystal-clear blue waters of Lake Ashi, the rising volcanic fumes of Owakudani and the magnificent Mount Fuji.

It's a shame that it was a rainy day with unclear skies so we won't be able to see Mount Fuji from here.
