Mom seemed to have found another gear since leaving Universal City so instead of taking the train all the way back to Shinsaibashi Station (心斎橋駅), we decided to get off at Namba and take a slow walk back to our hotel.
Most dessert shops close at around 8pm in Osaka but I was a little curious if we could find something on our way back to the hotel. Something sweet. Tabelog again came to my rescue and to my pleasant surprise, I managed to find Salon de the Alcyon, a French-style tea salon and pâtisserie that actually closes at 9pm.
Hidden just a few steps from Hozen-ji (法善寺) in a tiny alley and less than five minute walk from Dotonbori (道頓堀), Salon de the Alcyon has a small cake display counter on the ground floor entrance area, showcasing some of their winter creations including their Mont Blanc and strawberry cakes.
There's a staircase at the end that leads to the mezzanine floor tea salon.
We spent some time checking out their madeleine cakes, homemade apple juices etc. before turning our attention to their pastries but had to hurry a bit since the store was closing in a few minutes.
Pistachio mousse cake – While mom went with her usual Mont Blanc, I had to really dig deep to find something I like.
A very simple-looking pistachio cake that was labelled as "deep rich flavored" (濃厚).
As expected, the mousse came with super rich pistachio flavor. The center of raspberry gelée and strawberry purée really gave the cake some very nice, layering texture and I thought the two berries complemented the nutty, sweet flavors of the pistachio rather nicely without overpowering them with their acidity.
Still keeping up the pace, one dessert a day.....
