Chatterbox Café (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

My birthday celebration officially starts today, a couple of weeks early but to me, it's a welcome move considering the pandemic is playing a part in everybody's life. The ban on public gatherings of over 4 people certainly wasn't helping the cause either. Since we were already at K11 Musea for my little nugget's first-ever Easter egg hunt, we decided to simply grab a quick celebration meal there as well, at Chatterbox Cafe, an outpost from one of my go-to restaurants in Singapore.

Chatterbox Cafe and its signature chicken rice usually attract a fair amount of fanbase everyday so I was expecting a huge lineup despite the current situation. The lineup was still there albeit not as long as I originally thought and that was partially the result of these temporarily vacated tables. Since there were more than 4 of us, needless to say, we had to split into 2 groups.

Red bean soya milk ($32) - A strange twist to the local favorite, red bean ice with ice-cream. This came with soya milk which was a little less refreshing.

Mandarin chicken rice ($118) - The "world-famous" Hainanese chicken rice, that's how they advertised it on the food menu. The boiled chicken was pretty tender as always and the fragrant rice was right on the money. It came with the usual suspects including chicken soup, homemade chilli, ginger and dark soya sauce.

Char Kway Teow ($98) - But I'm more of a fan of their char kway teow. In fact, it's a dish I will always order whenever I visit their flagship in Mandarin Orchard. The wok-fried rice noodles was again tossed in their famous sweet soya sauce with prawns, scallops, squid, Chinese sausages and crispy silverfish. I would love a bit more spicy kick in there but this wasn't bad at all. Other than Satan Inn, I can't think of another place that delivers a similarly delicious char kway teow in Hong Kong.

Pan-fried carrot cake ($42) - Some local Singaporean joints don't offer this dish anymore; that including Hainan Shaoye (海南少爺) when I last visited them in March. Perhaps too much work?

This was seriously good. The pan-fried carrot cake was beautifully tossed with prawns, egg and preserved radish in their authentic dark soya sauce. The spicy kick was perfect too (which was missing in the char kway teow). I'm a happy camper now.

After lunch, we took some time to entertain my little nugget by introducing him to his first-ever Easter egg hunt in the K11 Musea mall. That was a lot of fun. Of course, he was overjoyed to finally get to play outside our little apartment. Come to think of it, it's been a lost year for everyone. Kids never get to go to school much so at a certain degree, it's affecting their development. I truly hope Covid-19 will go away soon so everything can be back on track very soon.
