Kyoto is not really known for its breakfast spots so not surprisingly, we had a tough time finding a place that offers a good continental breakfast (unless we look into the hotel restaurants). But we kept looking and looking, eventually we ran into one of the city's oldest stalwarts, Boulangerie Shinshindo Sanjo (進々堂 三条河原町店).
Boulangerie Shinshindo is a century-old institution when it comes to French bakery. Famous for their French baguettes, they now offer a pretty wide range of bakery goods, French-style as well as fusion ones with Japanese twist.
They have a small cafe right next to the bakery shop offering western-style breakfast dishes such as fried eggs or scrambled eggs with ham in a comfortable setting (without breaking the bank). The best part about it, it's open very early at 7am, 7 days a week!
Back to their bakery shop. On one side, you will find some of the more traditional French bread like croissants and baguettes.
But hidden at the other corner, some Japanese inspired bread such as this house specialty, curry pork buns.
We're going to have lunch in less than half an hour so we are not sitting down for breakfast this morning. Instead, just some bread on the go.
Their curry pork bun is seriously good!
Shinshindo is situated on the first floor of Royal Park Hotel Sanjo so in a way, we can look at it as a hotel restaurant too.
