Acidracines is supposed to be a big deal in Osaka. Owner-patissier Futoshi Hashimoto (橋本 太) who was born in Fukuoka, spent five years at Hiro Coffee in Osaka before moving to Hokkaido to work as a chef at Windsor Hotel Toya. After a brief stint in Bordeaux, he returned to Osaka and later opened his own confectionery shop.
Chef Hashimoto's creations are mostly traditional French but he likes to add his own spin to it to make it more interesting.
A small section of the dessert counter is dedicated to the chef's chocolate collection including his always popular Lactee, a chocolate mousse cake with raspberry.
They also have a corner dedicated to the chef's homemade French cookies and biscuits.
And of course, macarons in different flavors.
Gardian (500 yen) - I was looking for something light with some nice acidity.
This blueberry mousse cake called Gardian fitted the bill perfectly.
The blueberry mousse was so well matched with yogurt and a layer of crispy biscuit sable. Not bad.
Griotte Pistache (519 yen) - I like this one even more. It came with multiple layers of pistachio flavored sponge, pistachio purée, raspberry cream and cherry compote stacked up together. The idea is to have different flavors and textures with every single bite and they have achieved that beautifully.
There is obviously a reason why Acidracines is a Top 100 dessert café and cake shop in western Japan rated by Tabelog, the most popular dining guide in Japan. Its 3.94 rating is also one of the highest among French patisseries in Osaka making it a must-do for our holiday itinerary (It's a comfortable 10-minute walk from Osaka Castle).
