'Ello Donut (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

Doughnuts are back in the spotlight following the recent success of Flakes & Layers, Dough Beings and Dough Bros. The latest to join the fun is 'Ello, a new handcrafted doughnut shop who recently started a three-month pop-up at K11 Art Mall in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Apart from the usual sweet flavors, 'Ello also offers savory hot dog-styled fried buns and donut ice cream sandwiches, all with a funky twist.

One thing that sets 'Ello’s donuts apart is the fact that they are all fried with an air-fryer. This has to be very good news to donut lovers, as they can feel a little less guilty knowing that the dough is not fried in oil.

I can't possibly say no to these donuts which have drawn inspirations from local Chinese desserts like Ji Ma Wu (芝麻糊) Donut, Taro Sai Mai Lo (西米露) Donut and Tong But Luck (糖不甩) Donut.

Ji Ma Wu (芝麻糊) Donut ($38) - This is of course named after one of my favorite Chinese sweet soup, black sesame paste.

The doughnut was very very good. Very soft and spongy.

This was filled with runny black sesame paste in the middle. Not bad but I won't mind a little more sweetness in the black sesame paste.

Hong Kong Milk tea donut ice cream sandwich ($58) - Another one with local inspirations.

Inside the doughnut "buns" was milk tea flavored ice-cream with something like crispy croutons. I didn't get a crack at this but Jelloman said it was just average and I trust her palate (especially when it comes to desserts).
