Somboon Seafood Restaurant (Bangkok, THAILAND) ★★★☆☆

Somboon Seafood Restaurant (Ratchadapisek Road) used to be the place where I met up with all my ex-colleagues whenever we went on a business trip to Bangkok. Our team would fly in from different parts of the world and meet there for a quick bite after checking into our hotel. So I have been eating at this place for more than 10 years now.

Founded in 1969, Somboon currently has 7 branches in Bangkok including this one at the Central Embassy which was newly opened in 2014.

Comparing to the other branches, this Central Embassy branch sure looks a little different. It's well-lit, sleek and extremely comfortable.

How can we come to Somboon without trying their signature fried curry crab? It's a very special dish, especially the curry sauce made with their secret recipe. Flavorful and delicious - it definitely ranks right up there with Singapore's Jumbo. The only difference is that this one is a little less spicy but much sweeter.

The fried curry crab comes with 3 different sizes (small, medium and large). For parties of 2-3, medium (฿450) is more than enough.

Roasted fresh water prawns with glass noodle in hot pot (฿150) used to be one of my favorites here too. It's been a few years now and I found this not nearly as good as it used to be.

After all the seafood dishes, finally a simple stir fried kai-lan with crispy pork (฿120) to wrap things up.

The fried curry crab is still very much the same but the remaining dishes seem to have lost an edge comparing to the good old days.
