Situated in the quiet, once-bustling Cent Porta Chuomachi (大分中央町商店街), Pâtisserie MIYABI (みやび 大分菓子俱樂部) is a charming Japanese-inspired cake shop that we stumbled upon while trying to kill some time.
With another 1.5 hours to go before our dinner reservation just around the corner, we had time to leisurely explore the shop’s tempting selection of cakes, cookies, donuts, and other baked goods — all up close and personal.
It didn’t take long before each of us found something we like to take home for tonight’s snack.
Mont Blanc (560 yen) – Pâtisserie MIYABI offers two versions of Mont Blanc: one made with chestnuts from France, and another using chestnuts from Kumamoto Prefecture. Since we're in Japan, we naturally went with the one with locally sourced ingredients.
While the presentation was decent, I thought the chestnut vermicelli layers were a bit on the thin side. The base which was a combination of crisp pastry and a thin sponge cake, was also a peculiar choice that didn’t quite come together for me. Mom is the expert when it comes to Mont Blanc and she too felt it wasn't the tastiest one she's had on this trip so far.
