We were expecting a pretty long drive to Yanagawa (柳川市) today, and with so many unknowns along the way, we weren’t sure if we’d have the chance to sit down for lunch. So I figured it would be wise to fuel up with a big breakfast ahead of time.
We had spotted a cozy little bakery café called Bakery Tashiro on our way to Huis Ten Bosch the day before. It looked like the perfect breakfast spot to start our day before hitting the road.
While the bakery didn’t offer a massive variety of baked goods, everything was made fresh and in-house — a true labor of love from their kitchen.
Even some doughnuts. I haven't had one since leaving Fukuoka a few days ago.
Little nugget immediately raced off to the seating area and claimed a table while we were still deciding what to have for breakfast.
Finally, we got ourselves a full basket of goodies!
Everyone found something they wanted.
A tasty chocolate doughnut topped with crushed nuts kicked things off for me. Surprisingly, the chocolate glaze was made with dark chocolate so it wasn't overly sweet.
Everyone took my advice and got themselves a second piece of baked goods. This was my second: a brioche with a crisp, golden crust. I had no idea what it was but I could taste a subtle hint of chestnut baked into it — deliciously unexpected.
With that, we concluded our 24 hours in Sasebo — a brief but memorable stop that only scratched the surface of Nagasaki Prefecture (長崎県).
Now, it was time to head back toward Fukuoka for the final leg of our trip. Let the journey continue!
