Chaoyi Buer Yifeng Galleria 潮一不二 益豐·外灘源店 x Nina Métayer (Shanghai, CHINA) ★★★★☆

Chaoyi Buer (潮一不二) is a curated “art of living” space housed in Shanghai’s historic Yifeng Galleria (益豐·外灘源) near the Bund. Developed by Hantang Culture, it brings together a high-end café, rotating art pop-ups, and a luxury pastry boutique in one atmospheric setting.

The venue is highlighted by its exclusive collaboration with award-winning Parisian pastry chef Nina Métayer, featuring a selection of her signature French desserts. Nina Métayer was named World's Best Pastry Chef 2024 by the World's 50's Best.

We had the pleasure of tasting the creations by Nina Métayer in Paris before and were excited to experience them here once again.

So, we grabbed a seat at the café to indulge in our sweet treat before heading towards Sichuan Middle Road (四川中路) for our planned supper.

Bûche velours de citrouille (焦糖南瓜芝士) (¥88) — This came with a beautiful French name that literally translates to a "velvety pumpkin log".

The silky smooth texture combined with a refined, elegant presentation truly reflects the standards of French fine pastry.

The cake features a light and creamy mascarpone mousse with a centre of pumpkin and caramel. This was pretty delicious although I would personally have loved a little more cheese flavor in the mousse to improve the balance even further.

La Pistache (開心果慕斯) (¥88) — This one, in my view, is more sophisticated than the previous dessert.

It was truly a pistachio lover’s dream. The savory-sweet pistachio flavor came through in every layer of the cake. And the variety of textures each one infused with pistachio, was perfectly complemented by a crunchy shortbread biscuit base, making for an especially satisfying finish.

The shop also has a bakery corner offering a small selection of French-style baked goods. Since they were closing in less than an hour, they were offering a special 50% off promotion. Needless to say, we were thrilled to pick up a few treats for tomorrow’s breakfast.

What an amazing start to our Shanghai trip especially in the dessert department. I’m really looking forward to visiting a few more dessert spots around town before our journey wraps up in three days.
