A-Mei Teahouse 阿妹茶樓 (Jiufen, TAIWAN) ★★★☆☆

A-Mei Teahouse (阿妹茶樓) is one of Jiufen (九份)'s most iconic spots, nestled along the area's steep hillside staircases. Known for its striking Japanese-style architecture and glowing red lanterns, it’s no surprise that the teahouse is a magnet for tourists, especially those from Japan.

The setting is undeniably beautiful. From the terrace, you get sweeping views of the Jiufen mountains and the East China Sea beyond.

Naturally, the tables closest to the edge are the most coveted, offering unobstructed views and a front-row seat to Jiufen’s fairytale-like charm.

A traditional tea set here costs around NT$300, which includes a pot of high-mountain oolong tea, along with a selection of small snacks like mung bean cakes, candied plums, and other traditional treats.

When I saw the word teahouse, I had (perhaps unrealistically) hoped for appetizers or even a bowl of Taiwanese beef noodle soup (紅燒牛肉麵) but that turned out to be a bit of wishful thinking.

In my opinion, a visit to A-Mei Teahouse is best when you're going around or just after sunset — as darkness falls, the glowing lanterns and mountain vistas create a truly atmospheric experience.

As a thoughtful touch, each tea set also comes with a complimentary postcard featuring a photo of A-Mei Teahouse. Perfect for keeping or sending as a memento of your time here.

Now, time for a proper meal before bed time.
