My sensitive teeth are acting up on me again this week. After meeting my dentist in Central, I decided to grab a quick lunch before going back to work at home.
Didn't think there would be anything faster than a ramen lunch so I quickly went over to Nagahama No. 1 Ramen (長浜 No.1拉麵) at Kau U Fong. Hailed from Nagahama (長浜市) of Shiga Prefecture, Nagahama No. 1 Ramen is a popular ramen chain famous for its milky white tonkotsu (pork bone based) broth.
After a 20-minute wait, I was escorted to the counter table where I had the chance to watch the Japanese chef work behind the scene.
As usual, I like my noodles a little harder and no earthy notes from spring onion please.
It didn't take long for my No.1 Ramen, their namesake dish to arrive.
This smells so good!
It came with a soft-boiled egg, black fungus, barbecued pork and seaweed, all the usual suspects from a good Japanese ramen but preserved vegetables (梅菜)!?
The soft-boiled egg was quite decent but I certainly won't mind a more runny yolk.
The fatty barbecued pork was charred to perfection with nice smoky flavors.
The key was of course their creamy pork bone soup. Very rich and deep flavors. I wonder if they have added chicken to the soup to make this even sweeter.
It was a very lovely lunch and I was happy to wrap it up in less than an hour (including waiting time). On my way back to the MTR station, I walked past another ramen shop that has been on my radar screen forever - Maru De Sankaku (鯛白湯らーめん○de▽). Hopefully, I get to check it off my list soon (but look at the long queue in the alley!).
I thought it was a pretty nice meal all around but they could make the experience even better if their staff were reminded not to lower their face masks in the kitchen! I didn't realize it until midway through the meal and had to duck for cover on a couple of occasions. That wasn't a very pleasant feeling.
