Lucky Pierrot Burger Restaurant (Hakodate, JAPAN) ★★★☆☆

Before we took off for Hokkaido, I had to make sure that I have talked to Ben Sir, our walking encyclopedia to Japan to pick his brains on where to visit in Hakodate. Lucky Pierrot Burger Restaurant was one of the places he recommended and we were so glad that we listened.

As Hakodate's No.1 burger chain, Lucky Pierrot operates 17 stores in the city with each one having its unique theme.

The different themes range from Hollywood movie stars, Christmas, Disney to carnival.

We had just enough time to visit this Akaigawa branch out of our busy schedule. The retro diner is filled with paintings by Colombian artist, Fernando Botero, whose signature style is known as "Boterismo" which depicts people and figures in large, exaggerated volume.

What amazes me the most about Lucky Pierrot (no, not its decor!) is how it goes about its business. They have all kinds of merchandise marketed under their name including their own brand of soda, chips and spices.

Also their own T-shirt with their famous "lucky clown" logo on it. My little nugget loves the burger-shaped lunch box.

A glimpse at their food menu had me impressed even more. Beef, chicken, pork, shrimp, bacon and egg, they've got them all.

A top 10 list on their most popular drinks and snacks.

Needless to say, I had to check out the most popular item from the list - their soda. I thought it tasted a little like cream soda but less sweet.

After trying their No.1 drink, it's time to check out their top ranked burger, which happened to be their Chinese Chicken Burger (350 yen). The buns were really spongy and the fried chicken were dipped in a Chinese-style sweet and sour sauce (thus the name Chinese chicken burger). Much tastier than I thought.

Less successful was the tonkatsu (deep-fried pork cutlets) burger (380 yen), No.3 on their list. I thought a little dry even with their homemade tonkatsu sauce.

The French fries came with two different sauces - a cheesy sauce and one that tasted a lot like a smoky barbecue sauce. My advice is not to waste your time on the fries. None of us finished them.

The yakisoba with pork fillet was surprisingly decent (though a little salty).

We ordered this rice bowl with grilled pork and fried egg for our little one but he ended up choosing the yakisoba instead. Who could complain him.

Lucky Pierrot seems to have this magic power on the kids having meals there. Look how happy little nugget was after the meal!

Lucky Pierrot Burger is an institution in Hakodate and like Jelloman said, it seems to be everywhere in the city. In fact, she seems to think that there're more of them in town than Lawson Convenience Stores! 😁
