As its name has already suggested, The Augustiner am Gendarmenmarkt is located alongside the historic Gendarmenmarkt square right by the concert halls. It is famous among the locals for its authentic Bavarian cuisine and traditional beer pub setting.
We arrived almost an hour late from our reserved time after some mixup of our maps and itinerary. The manager tried very hard to accommodate us but the place was already packed except one little wine barrel table. At 9pm and not having eaten for quite some time, we were not going to be too picky about it.
You can't go wrong with the beer and pork's knuckle here. After working very hard to get a server's attention (10 - 15 minutes perhaps?), we finally placed our order and a thirst quenching cup of beer arrived just in the nick of time.
Beef consomme with Swabian liver noodles and fresh chives came next. This was a lot darker coloured than what we were used to and it's very flavorful. The Swabian liver noodles just added extra flavour to it.
...and finally our Crispy baked pork's knuckle with Baravian cabbage arrived. This looked roasted more than baked to me. The skin was crispy on the outside with moist ham inside. We were so overjoyed that we nearly forgot we have waited an hour (yes one hour!) for this to arrive (and they insisted that they did not miss our order. The slow service was simply a result of the restaurant being too full on Sunday!).
We still had room for the apple strudel but checking our watch, it was already late and with the effects of jetlag looming, we decided to call it the night. It was a nice German-style meal to be remembered although it would forever be associated with the disappointing slow service (taking orders, food etc.) at the same time.
