Roganic (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★★☆

Two weeks since returning from Tokyo, I am finally getting my first serious dining experience of 2024 at one of my favorite restaurants in Hong Kong. Roganic has been one of the city’s most steady performers since its opening back in 2019 and that consistency has earned its place on my short list of go-to restaurants.

I was again sitting at the counter table, which I thought was the most comfortable spot to enjoy my meal here at Roganic.

Fuseau artichoke and whipped ragstone, oyster mushroom XO – Lunch started off brilliantly with a small amuse consisting of a crispy shell made with mushroom which was filled nicely with small cubes of Fuseau Jerusalem artichoke, oyster mushroom purée, goat cheese and XO sauce.

Barbecued hen of the woods, miso butter, fermented horseradish, lemon thyme – Hen of the woods mushroom was first cooked with miso butter before finishing on the grill. I love the combination of egg yolk emulsion, fermented horseradish cream and lemon thyme
providing the dish with a lovely savory-sweet finish (and some acidity as well).

And the soda bread with cultured brown butter was back! How nice was that....

Dry aged duck, beetroot, baby turnip, raspberry vinegar – The 14-day dry aged duck glazed with local honey, really meshed well with the sweetness of the beetroot purée and powder. The flavorful sauce made with duck bones, turnip and raspberry vinegar was a very nice touch.

The second serving of the duck was duck leg confit which has been hiding under the kale leaf.

Ruby red strawberries from ping che farm, buttermilk, earl grey cream – Dessert was a refreshing one made of strawberry cubes, strawberry meringue, nori chips, buttermilk and earl grey cream. There were some minty flavors in the mix as well.

I desperately needed a decent meal after two very quiet weeks to start off the new year and this was exactly what I needed, simple, unpretentious and delicious.
