I have a very late start this afternoon and by the time I finally left home, it was almost 3pm. A very late lunch to say the least but thankfully I did have a big breakfast in the morning.
After checking a number of places out in Tsim Sha Tsui, I found myself sitting at Ramen Kureba (拉麵來), a new ramen shop which has just replaced Lucky Dessert (發記甜品) at the corner of Carnarvon and Hart Road.
Ramen Kureba started off in Tai Hang back in 2012 with the kitchen helmed by a Japanese chef brought in from Tokyo. Known for its vintage Japanese décor, the little ramen shop quickly became a hit and has since expanded to Mongkok a few years ago. This is their third branch.
Sadly, I didn’t do my homework before this meal so I didn’t realize
that they are best known for their tonkotsu (pork bone broth) ramen. In fact, I was convinced that they were a chicken ramen specialist judging by their chicken ramen centric menu which also includes a shrimp broth ramen infused with sake and ox-tail ramen with beef tongue. Since I was feeling a little adventurous today, I thought why not get my hands on their ox-tail ramen?
Ox-tail ramen with beef tongue (牛舌牛尾湯拉麵) – My first impression wasn't a very good one. It only came with two slices of beef tongue and some bamboo shoots. No soft-boiled egg, bean sprouts and the broth was a little oily.
The noodles were okay though it could've done a better job absorbing that flavorful broth. I went on to get a sip of the broth and as expected, it was intensely rich but very one-dimensional.
The only good thing about the ramen was the beef tongue. Very very tender.
