Yong Fu Xiao Xian MixC World 甬府小鮮 萬象天地店 (Shenzhen, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

Yong Fu Xiao Xian (甬府小鮮), the casual sister of Hong Kong’s Michelin-starred Yong Fu (甬府) has long been on my to-do list in Shenzhen since early last year. As we have just booked our tickets to Ningbo for the upcoming Easter holiday, I thought I should bring the family out to get ourselves acquainted with some of the popular Ningbo dishes.

This branch of Yong Fu Xiao Xian is located inside MixC World (萬象天地), a shopping mall we know all too well with our past visits. In fact, little nugget is spending a few hours here with a good friend of his, checking out some arcade games this afternoon.

Traditional Ningbo three delicacies (傳統寧波三鮮) (¥99) – While Yong Fu Xiao Xian is most famous for its raw crab and fish dishes, most of us were interested in the more down-to-earth Ningbo delicacies. Not surprisingly, we started the meal off with a soupy dish we could all do at home. Simmered in a rich and delicate vegetable broth were smoked fish fillets, meatballs, fish balls, shrimps and dumplings. A very hearty dish to kick things off with.

Black truffle vegetarian duck (黑松露素鴨) (¥49) –The vegetarian duck came with a nice, deep-fried batter.

This was packed with diced mushrooms inside.

Boiled duck blood with pickled Chinese cabbage (酸菜煮鴨血) (¥42) – I told little one that we would be ordering this dish and he’s going to at least try one slice of it for the sake of trying.

It’s been a while since I last had duck blood and it was really silky smooth just like the way I remembered it. I found the spicy and numbing sauce a bit too overpowering.

Stinky tofu with crab roes (蟹籽臭豆腐) (¥59) – I told little one that we would be ordering this dish and he’s going to at least try one slice of it for the sake of trying (No,  this was not a typo).

There was a sauce made with crab roes added on top of the tofu which felt like it’s been fermented.

Roasted braised pork belly with scallop (帶魚絲烤紅燒肉) (¥99) – The thin-sliced pork belly was really soft and tender, meshing well with the pillowy steamed buns. Not sure if it was really shredded dried scallops next to the braised pork (the menu said so).

Steamed stuffed buns (甬府小包) (¥39) – We all needed something more filling so the steamed buns were perfect as they were packed with chopped vegetables and meat. Little guy loves it~!

Handmade Tang Yuan (手工寧波湯圓) (¥12) – A trip to a Ningbo restaurant won’t be complete without tasting their handmade sweet dumplings.

This was a little bigger than the Cantonese version but what blew me away was the ultra-thin wrapper. Just a small bite already released a lovely burst of sweetness from the black sesame paste. Won’t mind having this again (and again).

Sweet mung bean soup with osmanthus (桂花綠豆沙) (¥12) – This was more like a mung bean purée, nicely topped by a layer of gluey osmanthus-infused honey.
