My herniated disc is acting up on me again so I decided to end my work day a little early to see a specialist. I was 15 minutes early for my appointment; perhaps some sweet treat before seeing the good doctor? Why not?
I was going to get my sweet treat at The Mandarin Cake Shop since I haven't been there for ages but that was before I spotted these lovely pastries at Sift Patisserie (Prince Building). I had to admit, I have never seen "Tong Yuen" (or Chinese glutinous rice balls) themed cakes before.
Admittedly, I have never been much of a fan of Sift and its desserts but I would make an exception for my first "Tong Yuen" cake. The question was, should I get the one with peanut or black sesame fillings???
Peanut Tong Yuen ($48) - I am a sucker for peanut butter so yeah, it's really not a very tough choice for me.
The silky vanilla mousse was perfectly decorated with a white chocolate glaze and as promised, a runny peanut paste centre, very much like a real Chinese glutinous rice ball!
This was sooooo delicious and what made it even more like a "tong yuen" was the layer of glutinous rice sitting between the vanilla mousse cake and the crumble on the bottom. It really felt like I was having a gigantic "tong yuen".
I don't know why local patissiers never came up with the idea of a "tong yuen" pastry before. Personally, I love European-style desserts made with Chinese inspirations and this was a classic example. The execution was perfect too, as they successfully re-produced the texture and flavor reminiscent of a real Chinese glutinous rice ball. I think it's a limited-time-only dessert specially for Mid Autumn Festival so I better act fast to check the black sesame one off my list soon.
