Jao Tsung-I Academy is a reclamation project brought to us by the HKSAR government and its business partners in recent years. Located at the former Lai Chi Kok Hospital, the historic compound was once a quarantine clinic, prison, infectious disease hospital and most recently a psychiatric rehab center before it was restored into this multi-purpose cultural center.
The new cultural center is built along the hillside of Lai Chi Kok sandwiched between a number of residential buildings.
The premise covers a total of 32,000 square metres in real estate, divided up into three zones - Low Zone, Middle Zone and High Zone.
Low Zone and Middle Zone are currently home to a restaurant, exhibition hall, theatre and a few activity rooms. And perched up high in the High Zone is a hostel called Heritage Lodge.
I love this reception area in the hostel. Feels like a traditional Chinese tea salon.
There's a lot of traditional Chinese design elements injected into the space here.
The asking price for their standard rooms is set at approximately HK$700 per night.
Walking to Mei Foo MTR station takes about 15 minutes but there's quite a bit of climning up and down the hill. A better option will be taking the hotel shuttle bus which circulates between the hotel and MTR every 30 to 45 minutes.
If you want to experience a little bit of cultural history while lodging in Hong Kong, check out Heritage Lodge.
