Hotel Plaza Opéra (Palermo, ITALY)

After spending the entire afternoon under the torching sun at the Valleys of the Temple, we finally decided to wrap things up and drive towards our final destination in Sicily, Palermo. It’s a 2-hour drive from Agrigento to Palermo, the largest city on the island and we are really looking forward to a totally different adventure altogether.

The moment we stepped into Palermo territory, we were completely surprised by the buzzy streets full of people and cars (unlike other cities on the island). We are staying at Hotel Plaza Opéra right next to touristy Via Della Liberta and it’s virtually impossible to find a parking space on the street. We spent almost an hour circling around the hotel without success and ended up reluctantly taking the hotel parking instead (which was more like a dark underground warehouse across the street).

We were glad to finally get the parking sorted out. So, quickly we finished the formality at the check-in counter and had our luggage dropped off before heading out for a very late supper.

Of course, we did a quick peek at our room before we headed out. I have asked for a room facing the backyard so it was really quiet. The combination of wood and warm colors from the furniture gave a nice sense of comfort and warmth.

The bathroom is pretty spacious considering we’re in Europe. Everything (such as amenities) looks to be good shape too.

There’s a small living room section near the window (not really a separate living room though), not that we had time to use it. But I did have some fun with the desktop computer.

After grabbing a quick meal near our hotel, we walked around the city’s main street, Via Della Liberta and neighboring Teatro Politeama Garibaldi and Piazza Castelnuovo. Before we could snap a few more pictures, we realized it was already late and not knowing much about the city’s safety, we decided to call it the night.

On the next morning, we found ourselves up really early for breakfast. Knowing we only had a few more hours to spend in Palermo before flying out to Rome, we wasted very little time washing down our breakfast dishes with fresh milk and fruit juice.

And we were gone in less than half an hour (not that the breakfast was good enough for us to hang around for more than half an hour).

Palermo is an amazing city with a great deal of history. Too bad our stay was too brief and the hotel we picked was a little far from its historic centre so we didn’t really get to soak up its culture and traditions nearly enough. Until next time, Palermo!
