Not only is it famous for its waterfalls and hot spring resorts, it's also home of a special cuisine by the local aboriginal tribes, commonly known as Atayal cuisine.
There are quite a number of interesting specialties in the Atayal cuisine including wild boar meat, bamboo tube rice, wild mountain yams, millet wine etc. and you can find all these aboriginal dishes on the Old Street of Wulai.
Unfortunately the Old Street did not offer much other than small street vendors and Taiya Po Po (literally means "Grandma Atayal") is likely one of the few options available if you are looking for a restaurant with comfortable seating.
Grandma Atayal (leftmost) was seen having a late lunch right next to us.
Stuffed bamboo tube / bamboo tube rice is a must-try here and it came in three different flavors - mushroom, original and red bean (which is sweet).
We had the mushroom bamboo tube rice and thought it tasted a lot like any Chinese-style sticky rice with chopped mushrooms and pork. Disappointingly, it didn't carry much of that bamboo flavor.
Deep fried squid and shrimp roll. OK but a little too greasy.
Deep fried spring chicken. I liked the white pepper that came along with the spring chicken but once again way too oily.
