Kedai Kopi Semua Semua Causeway Bay 蘇媽.蘇媽馬來西亞茶餐室 (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★★☆

Continuing on the theme of visiting some of my favorite cafes to start the year, I was in Causeway Bay for a couple of things and stopping by Kedai Kopi Semua Semua (蘇媽.蘇媽馬來西亞茶餐室) for tea was a no-brainer.

I have not been to this branch of the popular Malaysian cafe for quite some time; yet I knew exactly what to order.

Teh tarik – My first try on the hot version of the Malaysian pulled tea. A bit small in size yes but equally fragrant. Very nice.

Butter kaya toast – They have a different version here with a brown-colored toast which I always got confused with, but this was the one I was looking for this afternoon.

Somehow the kaya jam looked (and tasted) a little different than last time I was here. This was in brighter green color and came with a more creamy, custard-like texture. Much more pandan coconut flavor too! In fact, it almost reminded me of the signature butter kaya toast from Rempah Noodles.

Bakehouse Tsim Sha Tsui (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★★☆

Bakehouse is slowly becoming the neighborhood bakery that I have been waiting for decades. Since its expansion to Kowloon, more specifically Tsim Sha Tsui, I have been getting more and more chances to visit my favorite bakery shop in town.



Doughnut with raspberry jam – Again very pillowy and fluffy with the raspberry jam oozing out slowly on little nugget's first bite. Perfect.

Bolo bun with salted egg and caramel custard – A new creation or a Tsim Sha Tsui exclusive cuz I haven't seen this one before.

Well, the crust can't possibly match the crispy, golden top of our traditional pineapple buns but I like the idea of having salted egg and caramel custard in the middle. Something sweet and savory at the same time.

This wraps up a very eventful afternoon at Kowloon Park where we did lots of photo-taking for little nugget's little project. It's time to get some rest cuz we all have work tomorrow.

Higureya Menso 日暮家 麵匠 (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★☆☆☆

Higureya Menso (日暮家 麵匠) is a Japanese ramen shop opened by local pop-star AK and partners. To be brutally honest, I am not a fan of local pop music but my little nugget is very much into it. So, before bringing little nugget over for a meal, I decided to drop by for a look. 

Chicken paitan ramen (鶏白湯拉麵) – The signature ramen here is their chicken paitan ramen touted for the richness of the chicken broth. This came with some black fungus, chopped purple onion and two slices of chicken "char siu".

Like I always do, I had a sip of the broth before working on my noodles. This was so disappointing. What happened to the richness of the chicken broth? Not nearly rich enough for my standard and not really working well with the noodles (see the soup not clinging to the noodles at all).

The chicken char siu was dry and rough.

This one is a one and done...
