21-24 Cockspur Apartment (London, UNITED KINGDOM)

I have a pleasant surprise waiting for mom and little nugget in London. It's their first-ever trip to London and I have booked a spacious apartment in the heart of London for our 5-day stay.

Formerly the Norway House just off Trafalgar Square, this 21-24 Cockspur used to be the former Norwegian embassy but has since turned into a multi-purpose building housing a number of apartment rooms (for short and long stays) and a Thai restaurant on the ground floor.

The building itself dated back to 1890 and you can tell the long history judging from the lobby and lift.

For months leading up to our trip, I've been in touch with Alex from Lovelydays and finally got to meet him at the lobby of the apartment upon our arrival from Heathrow.

The L-shaped apartment is located on the fourth floor of the building. We first started by exploring the right side of the premise which would be the living room and kitchen.

This is a very nice dining area. I wish we have this kind of space in Hong Kong.

Sitting there on the couch listening to the lovely music from the vintage record player. Some kind of life.....

The record player is just one of the many pieces of throw-back accessories and furniture found in the tastefully designed apartment.

We were all super tired after the 12-hour flight but this guy still got enough left to be running around the place all night.

Say cheese.....

The kitchen isn't the biggest in the world but it has everything we need, from dishwasher, microwave, oven, fridge, wine cooler/refrigerator, washing machine, coffee maker (did I miss anything?).

Just like any good kitchen, all the plates, bowls, cutlery sets, cups, wine glasses ready when we needed them.

On the other side of the ball, we have the three bedrooms and two toilets. I really love the way the apartment is organized this way, so even if I watch TV late, I won't wake my little one up!

The first bedroom with a double bed. The window is facing the back lane so there's a fair bit of noise during the late hours when staff are throwing out the garbage from the neighboring restaurants or guys are having a heated argument. In fact, the latter happened a number of times during our stay.

I like the fact that this room has a lot of storage space and power sockets.

The second bedroom has two single beds.

Jelloman camps here for the next 5 nights.

Mom and little nugget got the better end of the deal. They have the master bedroom.

This probably has the size of the previous two rooms combined.

No wonder he's smiling all the way to the bank.

The master bedroom also has its own bathroom.

With bathtub too, which is perfect for little guy.

The second bathroom doesn't have a tub but the furnishing is again top notch.

Even have lights installed near the floor of the basin so we won't trip over ourselves while taking a shower!

Everyone including little guy woke up a number of times during the first night because of jetlag so we decided to have a very early breakfast at 6am!

Some father and son talk at the breakfast table.....

At last, sunrise!

A couple of pictures later, little guy already finished his breakfast and getting ready for some cartoon.

We had a wonderful stay at this luxurious 3-bedroom apartment on Cockspur Street. Location is absolutely unbeatable. It's right across from Trafalgar Square with The National Gallery just 400 metres away. There are a number of grocery stores (Tesco) around the corner when we needed water and fruit. Other attractions such as Piccadilly Circus, Regent Street, Chinatown, Leicester Square and Soho are all within walking distance and it's well connected to the other parts of the city via the subway.

I'm going to miss this dining table most cuz apart from my bed, I've spent the most time here during the five days. It's by far the best-looking dining room I've seen from an apartment hotel I had the pleasure of staying at.

The Food Story - Ricky's Kitchen 祥仔 (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

I love anything with "Made in HK" inspiration behind it. Celebrity chef Ricky Cheung (張錦祥), one of the many local chefs actively promoting traditional recipes inspired by old school Hong Kong has always been on my radar screen so when he announced the opening of The Food Story - Ricky's Kitchen (祥仔) in Lai Chi Kok last year, I have been quietly keeping a close eye on his latest project.

I haven't been to this side of Lai Chi Kok much so I was a little surprised with the work they've done transforming the warehouse space into the contemporary restaurant they've got here.

What surprised me more were their prices. With most dishes priced north of $100, do they really have a market here in an industrial area like Lai Chi Kok?

My 2-course lunch set ($128) started off brilliantly with a green salad featuring different winter vegetables roasted or confit. A healthy start to the meal. I especially enjoyed the crispy kale, which was the centerpiece of the salad.

For my main dish, I opted for an all-time favorite from Hong Kong's soy sauce western cuisine - slow-cooked beef tongue served with spaghetti and fresh tomato sauce (鮮茄燴牛脷意粉).

I don't think typical local restaurants slow-cook their beef tongue so we never get this nice, tender texture. This was so tender and flavorful. And three large slices too!

Chef Ricky's poached grouper with sweet corn sauce and steamed rice (粟米石班飯) is supposingly their signature dish but I think I'll come back for my beef tongue next time.

Dang Wen Li by Dominique Ansel 當文歷餅店 (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★★☆

I have been kicking myself for missing out on sharing a photo with Chef Dominique Ansel, one of my favorite patissiers in the world last week. Perhaps arriving early on a weekend morning can get the job done this time?

Of course, there's another bit of unfinished business for me - to get my hands on Dang Wen Li (當文歷餅店)'s signature creations, Lemon Juice Box (紙包檸檬茶) and Pineapple Bun (菠蘿包), both of which were sold out on my last visit.

Guess who's working the morning shift today? Chef Dominique himself!

Baguette Pound Cake (長棍麵包) ($168) - Finally, I got to check out a number of the house specialties which weren't available last week. This looks 90% like a classic French baguette but it was in fact a lemon pound cake dressed like a crusty baguette! A little too lemony but not bad.

Lemon Juice Box (紙包檸檬茶) ($62) - Very cute presentation. This is part of every Hongkonger's collective memory.

It was melting fast so I had to cut my photo session short and get my fork and knife ready.

The Lemon Juice Box consisted of bergamot curd, Earl Grey mascarpone mousse, almond biscuit, crispy feuilletine, and the cover was made of white chocolate. I thought the bergamot curd worked really well with the Earl Grey infused mascarpone. While this is not exactly lemon tea, the bergamot and Earl Grey tea flavors do combine for a taste reminiscent of our tea restaurant lemon tea.

Pineapple Bun (菠蘿包) ($65) - Like the Lemon Juice Box, this has "I'm too cute to eat" written all over it.

There's the thick slab of butter in the middle of the bun, like the same way a "real" pineapple bun was served at the local tea restaurant.

This came with a hidden centre of zesty jam made with pineapple, passion fruit and lime; balanced off nicely by a delicate coconut mousse. It was a well-designed and executed piece of pastry but I just didn’t see the connection to a real pineapple bun there.

Milk Tin Panna Cotta (黑白奶罐) ($65) - A white-chocolate "tin" with salted caramel panna cotta and a rum-soaked brioche centre.

This had to be the least delicious one of the three.

At last, I got my photo with the award-winning pastry chef! Congratulations on the opening of your first Hong Kong outpost, chef! Let's hope there will be more Dang Wen Li to come in Hong Kong than Maxim's and Saint Honore.
