Hai Shang Chao MixC 海上潮 萬象天地店 (Shenzhen, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

We are spending the night in Shenzhen for a small birthday celebration joined this time by the old folks. As usual, the crew got an early start heading north of the border while I picked up little nugget from school and brought him over around dinner time.

Again, we picked a hotel near MixC (萬象天地) so it was no surprise that our dinner would take place at the upscale mall in Nanshan.

Originated from Shanghai of all places, Hai Shang Chao (海上潮) is a modern Chinese restaurant specializing in Chaoshan cuisine (潮汕菜). In fact, there are quite a number of those in Shenzhen.

This guy stormed across the border like there's no tomorrow.

Chaoshan style fried rice with potato and mushroom (土豆香菇炒飯) (¥88) – This came with pretty nice bite and the portion was more than generous. Not bad.

Deep-fried pork ribs with fermented shrimp sauce (秘製蝦醬骨) (¥78) – Succulent and I love the fact that the fermented shrimp sauce wasn't overpowering. Portion-wise, it was a tad too small though.

Signature stewed goose blood (金針菜鵝血煲) (¥58) – A solid dish. No complaints there.

Steamed hairtail with first-harvest seaweed (紫菜蒸九肚魚) (¥168) – I wasn't a big fan of hairtail fish due to its soft texture but the bed of seaweed was a nice touch.

Stewed bitter gourd with pork belly (五花腩苦瓜煲) (¥78) – Talk about small portions, this was really small. Just six slices of bitter melon so one per person.

Chaoshan style oyster omelette (香煎蠔仔烙) (¥78) – Very crispy but not as fluffy as the ones we got in Hong Kong.

Baked pigeon with fermented bean sauce (豆醬焗乳鴿) (¥88) – They were preparing this at our table side but somehow even with the nice pour of fermented bean sauce onto the sizzling clay pot, the aroma didn't register.

A few of us were disappointed with this signature dish. The pigeons were tender and tasty but surprisingly bland despite the seasoning.

Crispy purple potato bun (脆皮紫薯) (¥36) – Dessert was the bright spot tonight starting with these purple potato buns.

Hidden inside was a centre of delicate custard.

Sweetened taro purée with gingko nuts (芋泥白果) (¥28) – A crowd pleaser as always. The taro purée was thick and gluey but not overly sweet.

At 9pm, MixC was still buzzing with energy but it was time for us to call it the night.

Tomorrow’s plan: breakfast buffet at the hotel, some game time for little nugget, and then a visit to K11 ECOAST at Prince Bay. Busy day ahead!
