While K11 ECOAST and Prince Bay proved to be works in progress with their share of vacancies to fill, there were some positives to take away on this visit. One highlight during our visit was a chance to check out a few shops without any lineups, including Xiao Cong Shan (小叢山), a specialty Chinese matcha teahouse (中式抹茶專賣店) located on the basement level.
Green tea beverages and ice-creams have become some of the hottest treats in Shenzhen lately, and modern teahouses are popping up all over the city’s major shopping malls. Xiao Cong Shan is one of the newer players in this growing scene but during our visit to their ECOAST location this weekend, not a single soul.
The décor at Xiao Cong Shan had me thinking I was in Kyoto enjoying a matcha dessert.
Chinese matcha cauliflower ice-cream (抹茶花椰菜冰淇淋) (¥36) – The most popular of all their ice-cream flavors and I could definitely see why.
I really like how they have added cauliflower to the matcha ice-cream to balance the bitter and grassy notes, bringing a subtle, clean sweetness to the mix. The pumpkin seeds and pine nuts on top was a nice touch too, delivering some lovely crunch and elevating the overall texture.
They also offer an array of modern matcha beverages which were probably worthy of a shot as well but given the scorching heat today, the ice-cream cones felt like the smarter choice.
Beyond the eateries, the arcade centre here might just be the quietest in the city. Little nugget and I had an unprecedented amount of uninterrupted game time — something nearly impossible elsewhere in Shenzhen.
All in all, K11 ECOAST may still be finding its stride but based on this experience, it’s certainly worth a return visit.
