Sun Wah Cafe 新華茶餐廳 (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

Sun Wah Cafe (新華茶餐廳), an institution when it comes to local tea restaurant food has been on my radar screen for quite some time. Their egg tarts have consistently been praised as one of the top ten egg tarts in Hong Kong and that alone is already worthy a visit.

I got off work a little earlier than expected today so I decided to pay this old stalwart a much anticipated visit.

Following nearly 60 years in the business, Sun Wah is already in the hands of their third generation of owner but one thing remains the same, the dedication to use some of the freshest ingredients from the market.

Kicking things off for me was their iced milk tea (港式奶茶). This was OK. Very creamy and the tea wasn’t particularly strong.

The noodle soup with satay beef (沙爹牛肉麵) was pretty impressive for a small cha chaan teng. I could easily tell that the beef was of good quality judging from its texture. Very very tender and the satay sauce with peanut wasn’t over the top like most restaurants in town.

Butter toast (油多).

Of course I had to get myself and my family some of Sun Wah’s signature egg tarts and let them make their own judgement on whether it should have a place among Hong Kong’s best egg tarts.

Personally, I thought it was pretty decent but the crust could have been a little more buttery and flaky, while the egg custard could have been more eggy; but having said that, I guess my expectation was sky high coming in so it would take a lot for their egg tart to impress me…
