October to December is hairy crab season so if you happen to be visiting Shanghai during these months, give yourself a pet on the back because you're most definitely in for a treat. There are a number of good places to get your hands dirty on these highly coveted hairy crabs but if you only have time for one shot, Wang Bao He Restaurant (王寶和酒家) is the one that will give you your money's worth.
The restaurant is located on the first floor of Wang Bao He Hotel, just off Zhejiang Zhong Lu (浙江中路). There's a banner on the wall that says "The best place for crab in Shanghai", which a lot of my friends tend to agree including my local driver.
And what would a crab banquet be without live music, right?
It's still a little early in the hairy crab season so not surprisingly, there were plenty of seats available.
It looks like I have come to the right place for crabs. A full page of menu dedicated to crab inspired dishes. That's outstanding.
Mushroom roll with crab roes (蟹粉菌菇卷) (24 RMB) - I decided to warm up my palate with a couple of crab themed appetizers first. The first was a mushroom roll with crab roe fillings. This was pretty tasty though a bit on the greasy side.
Sautéed prawn with crab roe sauce (蟹粉燒明蝦) (48 RMB) - The prawn was sautéed with the shell and head on. The key here was the rich and flavorful crab roe sauce giving the bouncy textured prawn a lot to work with. Very nice.
Steamed hairy crab (清蒸大閘蟹) (172 RMB) - There's always a debate on whether to get a male or female crab. The answer is fairly simple. If you happen to like orangey roes with intensely rich flavors, go with the female crab as the male crab are better known for its whitish roes which is softer and more creamy.
I have already made up my mind before arriving here that I would go with a female crab. And I think there's no better way to have it than steamed.
Meet my new friend here who's very adept in picking apart any hairy crabs! In case you're lazy like me who doesn't want to get your hands dirty, simply ask for any waitress to do it for you with no extra charge.
It's important to take note that you're not supposed to eat every part of the crab; for example, the heart and four other parts of the crab were supposed to have adverse effects to your body so they should be carefully removed (which is why I gave it to my specialist friend to deal with).
I started munching at the first bowl of hairy crab meat while my friend continued to work on the rest of the crab for me. Very fresh and sweet~
This is why I pick the female crab. Look at those juicy crab roes in orange color!
Mission completed...! My friend finally finished picking my crab apart and I did the rest of the hard work putting them into my tummy.
Some hot ginger tea to wrap up my mini hairy crab feast as always.
Stir fried luffa (清炒絲瓜) (28 RMB) - Something green to stay healthy. Again on the oily side.
I was totally stuffed so I decided to just walk back to my hotel, rather than taking a cab.
