Anyone who has been paying attention to Hong Kong's street food culture, should know about Santos and their high-flying deep fried chicken leg by now. They used to be a little take-away food stall in Tai Po that specializes in two types of chicken legs - deep fried and soy-marinated. Both of these do look very tempting on Instagram but it was a little far to travel all the way to Tai Po just for take-away food.
Then news broke earlier this year that they will open a number of new outlets in 2016. Their newest outlet recently opened in Tsuen Wan, just across the street from Nan Fung Centre and I decided to check it out myself.
Looks like Santos is not a one-trick pony at all as they have got a full range of snacks on their menu.
I'm familiar with the term "black cow" (黑牛) referring to a coke float with vanilla ice-cream but "gold cow" (金牛)?
Turns out it's their cream soda float with mango ice-cream. Interesting although it didn't taste as good as a black cow.
Here comes my crispy chicken leg, fully breaded with Japanese bread crumbs before they do the deep-fry. The size of this baby is HUGE and I have to agree with many food bloggers' claim that it does taste a lot like the Japanese tonkatsu.
As much as I like this deep-fried chicken leg, I'm not so sure if I agree with the claim that this is the best chicken leg Hong Kong has to offer.
