Our alarm clock sounded off and it signaled for time to wake up for breakfast. I am not talking about the usual boring breakfast with eggs and sausages. I am speaking of our date with Hidemi Sugino and his signature mousse cakes. And we knew we better got there early before everything got sold out!
Tucked away in the back alley of a financial district and across from the Police Museum, Hidemi Sugino Patisserie is no longer the best kept secret in Tokyo. He won the World Pastry Competition back in 1991 and really never looked back. Just look at the long lineup in front of the little shop everyday.
Luckily for us, there was no lineup here this morning.
The Ambroisie, the signature cake by Hidemi Sugino that also won him the Coupe du Monde was supposed to be the highlight here. But our phototaking session took way too long and before we knew it, they were all sold out!
Arabique (¥680): For a non-coffee drinker, it's probably tough for this chocolate-coffee mousse cake to impress. The texture itself was faultless but the coffee flavor combined with the bitterness of the dark chocolate seemed a bit too powerful at times.
Larme (¥630): Autumn is the best time for marron so what better else to have than a marron mousse cake embedded with chestnut cream. Soft in texture and rich in flavor. This was the best one out of the three.
Mysteriuse (¥630): We wanted something more refreshing to finish so the Mysteriuse was the obvious choice. This pineapple mousse cake was a new item on the menu and I thought it was just okay.
One point worth noting about Hidemi Sugino's opening hours - they are closed on Mondays.
