The two major selling points of Jasper are its Mediterranean-inspired delicacies and lake-side location. Those proved to be good enough reasons for them to warrant a one-star rating in the 2010 Michelin guide.
Amuse Bouche was a small tomato confit on top of a cous cous salad. A simple dish to get our adrenaline going (5/10).
South African scampi was picked as our first starter of the night and it was served with a mix of avocado, cucumber and muscovado sugar.
The scampi were deliberately undercooked ever so slightly to preserve their natural sweetness (6/10).
I was fascinated by the terminology used in the menu, Lasagne of corn-fed chicken and decided to give it a go. It turned out to the best dish of the night.
Ultra thin slices of corn fed chicken were layered together to form a chicken "tower" and then served with a wild mushroom cream.
The creamy sauce with small sized wild mushrooms provided an excellent supplement (9/10).
My main course was the roasted scallops with sauteed cauliflower in a curry marinade. Honestly, I didn't really enjoy my scallops with the chopped cauliflower at all. They just did not seem to work very well together (4/10).
More successful was the next main course - sea bass fillet with light-smoked mashed potatoes, chanterelles and fried quail egg. The crispy skin of the sea bass was especially attractive (5/10).
We were pretty stuffed already so decided to call it the night after a rather disappointing petite four.
Before we go, a small glass of chilled jasmine tea to finish off a fairly satisfying dinner.
