There's one place in Samcheongdong I will always visit whenever I come to Seoul - a traditional Korean dessert café called Sojukdoo (小赤豆). Situated in a century-old hanok near Gyeongbokgung, Sojukdoo (literally meaning "The Little Red Bean") is the perfect place to catch a breath after a busy day of sightseeing.
As the name has already indicated, the heart and soul of the café is their sweet red bean porridge called danpatjuk.
Other fan favorites include their patbingsu, or red beans with shaved ice.
One of the reasons I like this café so much is largely because of its modern-meets-traditional décor. This kind of places are definitely getting hard to come by in this day and age.
I had their sweet red bean porridge (₩7,000) as always. The addition of chestnuts, gingko nuts, black beans, glutinous rice cakes and pine nuts was supposed to provide nourishing effects to our body.
This was a lot thicker than what we were used to from a Chinese style sweet red bean soup but the flavors were more mild.
Shaved ice with red beans and green tea ice-cream (₩7,000) is another popular choice around here but of course it doesn't carry the same pedigree as their famed sweet red bean porridge.
