Cova Ristorante & Caffe (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★☆☆☆

It wasn't that long ago when Cova Ristorante & Caffe was considered one of the better Italian restaurants in Hong Kong. But in recent years, we have seen its stock plummet after the increasingly fierce competition in the local food scene.

Today I was keen to give them a second chance and decided to drop by with zero hesitation. Lunch looked like quite a treat to me as there were 2 options available in the menu. One got to choose between antipasto with primo piatto ($268) or antipasto with secondo piatto ($308).

While I was going through the antipasto bar, guess who I ran into? Mr. Allan Zeman, "Father of Lan Kwai Fong" is in the house!

The antipasto bar did look good on paper. Parma ham, smoked salmon, all kinds of salad, Italian meatball, the list went on and on but the problem was that very few of them were able to live up to expectation.

I would take Sabatini's antipasto bar on any given date.

For main course, I had the chef's recommendation - a seared Brittany cod fillet with vegetable tagliolini in crazy water sauce.

Just for the record, I bought a piece of French white cod fish from Three Sixty the other day and had it pan seared at home with some garlic and spices. It was beautiful.

But what I was getting here was disastrous. First of all, the cod fillet was actually poached not seared (there was a chinese interpretation mistake there on the menu.). Secondly, the fillet was totally bland without any flavors. The "crazy water sauce" or seafood broth was watery and weak.

Maybe I should have gone with their pasta or risotto but this was really a weak effort. From now on, I would only consider their pastries and afternoon tea set.
