Café - Patisserie Artisanal (Augsburg, GERMANY) ★★★☆☆

It didn’t take long for us to finish exploring Augsburg’s fairytale Old Town, despite arriving a little later than expected this afternoon. One bonus agenda item which wasn’t on our original itinerary, was a visit to Café – Patisserie Artisanal.

We stumbled upon this café and cake shop while browsing local stores around Fuggerplatz at the heart of Augsburg’s historic centre.

It was a little too late for dine-in at this hour, but we still had the option of grabbing a sweet treat to go.

Pistachio Royale (€7) — This tasted a lot like a pistachio mille-crêpes cake. I thought the pistachio flavor would be front and centre, but that wasn’t entirely the case. (The cake took a bit of a tumble on our way back to the hotel while we were walking in the rain.)

The different layers of crêpes were sandwiched together with pastry cream in between (but there wasn’t much pistachio flavor there). There were also crushed pistachios to add to the overall texture.

All in all, it wasn’t bad, but the pistachio flavor could have been much richer and deeper to truly qualify as a pistachio lover’s dream.

Bäckerei Konditorei Wolf Steingasse (Augsburg, GERMANY) ★★★☆☆

Bäckerei Konditorei Wolf is a traditional bakery and confectionery chain that originated in Augsburg, with roots dating back to 1655. With over 30 branches these days, it feels like they’re in every corner of Augsburg (Augsburg is not that big). In fact, when we arrived, we quickly ran into two branches, and this one is just a short walk from Rathausplatz.

We decided to go inside to check out some baked goods for tomorrow’s breakfast, and there were some great selections available.

If we hadn’t been on such a tight schedule, it would have been nice to sit down for a sip of coffee at their café, but we had dinner already lined up within the next hour.

Wolf-Krapfe — One of the bakery's signature item.

The traditional German equivalent of an American donut, this had a similar pillowy texture but was filled with house-made currant-raspberry jam (Johannisbeer-Himbeer-Konfitüre), from which all seeds have been manually strained. I thought it was pretty decent. Compared to the American version, it was less sweet and had a more noticeable, eggy flavor.

Dinner was next, and we have another German meal lined up for tonight. It may very well be our last one on this trip, as my team hasn’t been particularly impressed with German cuisine so far.

L’Osteria (Salzburg, AUSTRIA) ★★★☆☆

With the rain pouring harder and harder, we decided we should find a quick lunch spot rather than leaving Salzburg for Augsburg immediately. Luckily, L’Osteria was conveniently located close to where we parked our car.

Their wood-fired pizzas are obviously the calling card, and there were plenty coming out of the kitchen.

Beef orecchiette with lemon (€15.9) — The al dente orecchiette pasta came with beef fillet strips, sweet peppers, and rocket leaves. I love the firm, slightly chewy texture of the pasta, and the extra kick from the sauce was a great match.

Degli Artisti pizza (€16.5) — A deluxe wood-fired pizza topped with fresh mushrooms, cheese, ham, salami, pepperoni, peppers, and more. Watching closely at our neighbors’ pizzas right out of the kitchen, I could already tell what was coming — and just how generous the portions would be. No wonder our server told us that one pasta and one pizza would be more than enough for the three of us.

Little nugget was trying to measure how big it was with his arm!

The dough was probably a little too soft for me, especially in the middle where all the toppings were sitting, but it wasn’t bad at all.

I have to admit, it was a real jaw-dropper when the pizza landed in front of us. I didn’t think we could finish it even with empty stomachs — and in the end, we didn’t.
