Houhai Harbour (后海匯) is one of my least favorite shopping malls in Nanshan mainly because there are so many empty stores inside. But since our karaoke session overran a little, we had to make up for the lost time later. And it became apparent that we had to settle for supper a few levels down from the karaoke club.
Songhelou Suzhou-Style Noodle (松鶴樓蘇式湯麵) is a casual spin-off of the centuriy-old Suzhou culinary brand “Songhelou,” best known for authentic Jiangnan-style clear broth, thin noodles, and traditional toppings.
As with our previous visits to Houhai Harbour, there weren’t many people hanging around the mall.
Crab roe dumpling (蟹黃湯包) (¥19) — The wrapper was way too thick for me, and mine even broke the moment I laid my chopsticks on it.
Crayfish tossed noodle (蝦找麵) (¥88) — I really liked the crayfish — savory, rich, and mildly spicy. Too bad that while the crayfish paired well with the shrimp sauce, it didn’t harmonize with the bed of traditional thin, smooth Suzhou-style noodles.
Stir-fried crab roe with noodle soup (清炒蟹粉麵) (¥112) — The highlight was the combination of the red broth (紅湯), made with a slightly sweet, savory soy-sauce blend and noodles.
But the crab roe itself didn’t quite live up to the hype.
We managed to finish our meal in 20 minutes which left us sufficient time to head back to Futian Station. Mission accomplished.
