Three Meals Four Seasons 三餐四季 (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

Little nugget’s adventures have taken me to some unexpected corners of Hong Kong, and this morning, we found ourselves in Sheung Shui (上水) for one of his school activities. Afterwards with our tummies starting to rumble, we decided to do what any hungry local would do — find the closest cha chaan teng and sit down for a quick Hong Kong-style lunch.

Our path led us to a place called "Three Meals Four Seasons" (三餐四季), a family-run canteen-style eatery that instantly transported me back some 30 years ago, when these kinds of humble diners dominated the streetscape.

First to the table was my iced milk tea — always the litmus test for any cha chaan teng. While it lacked the bold fragrance of a truly great cup of pantyhose milk tea, it still managed to pass thanks to a solid dose of creaminess and a decent balance between tea and evaporated milk. Not a standout, but comforting in a familiar way.

For the main event, I went with a classic Hong Kong comfort dish: stir-fried instant noodles with fatty beef. It was better than what I've expected.

The noodles were nicely coated in a sweet soy sauce that was a little bit salty, but the overall flavor was spot on. Most importantly, the noodles still held a bit of bite and not overly soggy, which is always a win in my book.

Somehow, we managed to spend five full hours in Sheung Shui, baking under the heat like a couple of barbecued pork buns. Time to head home and slap on a generous layer of whiting cream.
