Fix Deli at The Ritz-Carlton Shenzhen 深圳星河麗思卡爾頓酒店 (Shenzhen, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

I have a few things to take care in Shenzhen this morning so I decided to catch an early train about an hour ahead of my team. Normally, I would grab my breakfast spot would be Tsui Wah (翠華) right inside the Convention & Exhibition Centre metro station but today, I ended up trying something new instead. 

I went for a sweet breakfast at Fix Deli of The Ritz Carlton Shenzhen (深圳星河麗思卡爾頓酒店)! 

They are known for having some of the best French pastries in Futian near the border so not surprisingly, they are also among the priciest in town.

Since it was still early, the selection was quite limited. There were only a lychee strawberry mousse cake, a Black Forest cake, and one other option which is what I ultimately chose.

Paris-Brest (巴黎布雷斯特) (¥88) — I was looking for something nutty yet refreshing, and this fits the bill perfectly.

The chocolate-coated pâte à choux itself was quite pleasant, complemented nicely by the intense hazelnut praline cream and a bright mandarin coulis. The balance between sweetness (from the hazelnut) and acidity (from the mandarin) was spot on. If I had to be a little picky, I’d say the hazelnut praline cream could have been slightly more airy and delicate. As it stood, the texture leaned a bit on the firm (slightly frozen) side.

My sister from Canada is joining us this morning in Shenzhen. I hope she enjoys her first-ever visit north of the border!
