In case you haven't heard of food critic Andy Hayler already, he's the only person to have eaten at almost every three-star establishments in the world. He was interviewed by Hong Kong's SCMP late last year and described the Michelin guide for Hong Kong and Macau as "erratic". To a certain degree, I tended to agree.
Take Ho Hung Kee for example. Founded back in 1946, it has been a very successful local congee and noodle shop for many many years. I love what they are doing with their signature wonton noodles but to be listed as a one-star Michelin restaurant, this is a bit too much.

Ever since it received its one-star status, Ho Hung Kee has become a tourist haven. Like this particular evening, the place was packed with tourists. We were just one of the few locals here.

Don't get me wrong. I like their wonton noodles. The noodles are al dente and the broth was nice.

Their crispy chinese donut rice roll was another excellent dish.

But to me, this is not the haute cuisine we were expecting to be associated with Michelin star status.
