Din Tai Fung is the place to be if you want to take a bite of the best xiaolongbao but only one slight problem though - their Tsim Sha Tsui branch is so popular that we could hardly find a table even as early as 6pm. Luckily, they have opened a new branch in Shatin.
They have all kinds of different steamed xiaolongbaos here ranging from truffled pork, pork with crab roes and even a vegetarian version.
Don't call me old-school coz I am still a fan of the original steamed xiaolongbaos with pork. I liked that ultra-thin skin but they had to do a better job with the broth (5/10).
I had this Shaoshing wine marinated chicken last year in Taipei and still remembered that mouthwatering taste. Too bad this did not have the same attractive texture and flavor (4.5/10).
I was a little surprised that even the marinated beef tripe tasted better than the previous two dishes (5.5/10).
Another house specialty, spicy and sour soup provided one of the few bright spots for us (6.5/10).
But I thought the Taiwanese style ("dan-dan") noodle with pepper and spicy sauce was easily the best dish of the meal. The special sauce provided an exciting combination of contrasting flavors (7.5/10).
A little bit of spinach tossed with diced garlic to wrap up our lunch (5/10).
Service was excellent but they had to do something with their signature dishes for us to come back again.
