After a quick dim sum lunch with mom in my childhood streets of Prince Edward, I set off on my own towards Sham Shui Po. My destination was a hidden foodie street with gems like Ten Noodle Shop (十大碗粥麵專家) and Heartwarming (暖心芝作).
But today, I had a different destination in mind — Alcove Coffee & Patisserie.
Tucked away like a little secret, Alcove Coffee & Patisserie is a rare kind of place where artisanal coffee and exquisite pastries share the same cozy roof. The shop is tiny but it’s decorated with such warmth and taste. Almost like you’ve stepped into someone’s cozy living room.
Behind the display counter sat a small yet intriguing selection of sweets. From a delicate chocolate tart and pound cake to the house specialty Basque cheesecake.
The dessert that stole the spotlight came in a number of flavors — original, vanilla, and black sesame. They all sounded tempting, but my mind was already set on the pistachio.
It wasn’t my first time trying a basque cheesecake with that slight ooze in the centre. The last time I had something this beautiful was in Kaohsiung (高雄), in a backstreet café, where a slice of heavenly basque cheesecake came layered with a gorgeous thick slab of taro purée (or cream, depending how you see it). This was nearly as mouthwatering.
Sandwiched in the middle this time was a thin layer of pistachio cream and jam. The savory notes of the pistachio really stood out prominently against the richness of the cheesecake, creating a beautifully balanced contrast.
And because this was so small — yes, I definitely thought about getting a second slice.
